Melanie Vugich’s still life paintings are a joyful celebration of colour, form and the quiet beauty found in everyday objects. Each piece in this collection was either started or finished in the glorious month of April, when Sydney’s weather is at its beautiful best and many of my favourite flowers are in full bloom. The coastal banksias in my neighbourhood are magnificent during the autumn months, and I love setting them alongside magnolias, marigolds, sunflowers, hollyhocks and fleshy fruit.
The palette for “April” was inspired by the vibrant colours of Broken Hill, my outback hometown, which I visited a couple of times over the summer… The rusty desert hues served as a starting point and worked so seamlessly with the pink and gold backgrounds that regularly appear in my paintings.
